Daniel Kahneman is a Nobel Prize winner who helped us understand how our biases cloud our thinking.
In his new book, “Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment,” he shares something interesting, at least to me.
He says that one’s own second opinion can be better informed than a first opinion. Often, sleeping on an idea and being asked the same question again a day or two later can yield completely different results.
It is as though the idea incubates and has a chance to collect within our mind with other previous ideas to yield a better decision.
I know this might be opposed to Malcolm Gladwell’s idea in “Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking” but I believe it is our misinterpretation that is the issue.
Sometimes one idea will be correct. At another time, another one will be correct.
It doesn’t make one idea superior to another.
It illustrates that ideas are different than mathematics or physics, where absolutes exist.
It is important to remember that ideas like clichés can appear opposed to one another.
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth and conflicts with beware of Greeks bearing gifts.
Do unto others as you would have others do unto you conflicts with nice guys finish last.
Absence makes the heart grow fonder conflicts with out of sight, out of mind.
With clichés, we accept the notion of opposed opinions. We don’t with ideas.
Ideas can conflict just like clichés.
Sometimes it’s correct to act instinctively, and other times to think about it.
