Authenticity

Authenticity | Career Angles

Authenticity is an important attribute in modern American culture. We want to feel like we’re dealing with “real people,” or people who are being “real” with us. But what the heck does that mean anyway?

I decided to look in an online dictionary for a definition.

noun

1. the quality of being authentic.

“the paper should have established the authenticity of the documents before publishing them

-Oxford Languages

That doesn’t help. Let’s try authentic.

The definition of authentic is something that is original or true and not a copy of anything else. A painting that was actually created by Monet is an example of a painting that is authentic. Of the same origin as claimed; genuine. The experts confirmed it was an authentic signature.

-yourdictionary.com

“Original or true and not a copy of anything else.”

That’s not particularly easy to fulfill in a culture or we are bombarded with inputs from so many different directions that are designed to make this by things and act in particular ways as well as hate people different than us.

Genuine, though, hit’s true.

It becomes the focal point for answering the question, “Who are you?”

Who are you as a person?

What does your soul tell you when you answer that question?

Don’t define yourself by your job or your relationships with others (husband, wife or partner, child of so-and-so, an employee of _______ where I do . . .).

The question, “Who are you,” requires that you face yourself and not the world outside of you.

It asks you to look in the mirror and look at your authentic self.

In the workplace, most people act as sheep following directions and never using their voice.

They act like a fox — an animal without a voice.

They follow directions but think of themselves as powerful.

What’s the truth?

Who are you?

How can you bring that into your workplace and stop hiding?
