Excuses | Career Angles

Originally Published on

I was reminded of the fabulous Tony Robbins Ted Talk recently where he talks about resources and resourcefulness. When he speaks about the lack of resources, he is speaking about excuses people give for why they don’t succeed. And when he asks his audience for example of resources, seated in the front row is Al Gore who speaks about not having the Supreme Court with them in deciding the election. Robbins shoots him down by pointing out that heavy done certain things differently the election would’ve never gotten to the Supreme Court.

Resourcefulness is the ability to focus on quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties. It is not just focusing on the problem but focusing on the solution to the problem.

Is a wonderful fable about doctors seeing a lot of people floating down a river in trouble. They pull over and start taking people out of the river and helping them. Another doctor, seeing what’s going on pulls over, looks, and starts running back to his car.

“Where are you going? You have to help,” he is called to.

He calls back, “while you’re doing that, I’m to find out who’s throwing people in the river and stop them.”

Yes, it is important to deal with the immediate crisis and it is also important to stop the causes of it.

You may blame lack of resources, lack of knowledge, lack of opportunity, the list can go on forever.

But how can you be resourceful and solve these issues for yourself and others?

Until you figure that out, you are making excuses.
