Fear. A four letter word that lies to us.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I initially was called “The Big Game Hunter” when I did search. I’m a coach now who helps people with workplace issues–job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading,. I came across a quote today I thought was wonderful.
“Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are our own fears.”
Wow. Fear. I know it’s held me back at times. I know it’s providing me with abundant excuses for things I never wind up doing. What about you? How does fear rule you? What’s the lies or what are the lies that fear tells you? Why do they get through? That’s the fun question. Why do they get through?
I know, for myself, often the message gets through because it reinforces a memory I have from when I was much younger that caused me to really stop in my tracks because I know someone who I thought loved me said something harsh to me.
Someone who I thought cared, said something harsh and could have been a parent, could have been a friend, doesn’t really matter, but it gets through. It got through then. And the current event kind of links in my subconscious to that memory.
You know, I’m going to bring up something quirky. I’m afraid to put contact lenses in my eyes. I can’t get my hands up near my eyes and the closest thing I have a memory of that is my mother say, “keep your fingers away from your eyes. You can go blind poking an eye out.” I can’t get a contact lens there.
I’m sure there are things professionally, where I’ve hurt myself from my fear. I know, I didn’t leave jobs I should have for way too long a period of time, because I was afraid of starting over. didn’t want to do that. Where does fear rule you? And how can you change a little bit? I don’t think I can change the thing about my eyes. I have tried on and off for years to put a lens in my eyes. I just can’t do it.
But some of the other things I have. Other things I have, like leaving a long career and moving into coaching. Changing my hat from one that said headhunter to Coach and and being public about that. That wasn’t so easy, but I’ve done it. I think I’m doing pretty well. Where could you do it differently?
I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you found this minimally helpful, provoked some thoughts on your part.
