Every once in a while, I read a perfect description of what needs to happen.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a career coach helping firms be more effective with hiring, managers be more effective in their job search, managing people, leading people. Being more effective in the workplace, in general.
You know, I read a variety of blogs and every once in a while I read something that’s absolutely perfect. It’s something related to hiring. It comes from Alexandra Levitt and Watercooler Wisdom. Let me just read this to you. It comes from an article that she wrote called “The evolution of Recruiting from 2009 to 2019.” I’m not going to go through the history. I know it from personal experience; many of you will, as well. But let me just read this section.
“Once employers held all the cards and had all the power. If your company had a website, or was in the news, you were golden. But in 2019 (which is what I’m recording this, of course), recruiters must work hard to convince top talent to invest their careers with an organization. To start, organizations must have a consistent, reputable, transparent and compelling employer brand. They then, must showcase that brand through a carefully orchestrated hiring process that makes individual candidates feel respected, valued and cared for.” Folks, you really do that. Most of you don’t. “And that process must transition into pre-boarding and onboarding experiences that make new hires feel good about their decisions, prepare them to to contribute right away.”
Folks, this is so true. And I know you know it. And I know many of you know, the firm can do better. Doing better–That’s what men do. That’s what women do. That’s what professionals do in order to give their best.
If you want to give 75% effort, go ahead. But there’s a consequence to that and the consequence is, you lose people because you haven’t done what Alexandra points out. What you do is offend people, hurt people, dismiss people, cause others to look better than you. I know that isn’t what you want. You have a job that has to be filled, and need to have it filled in these full employment times as we are in right now.
With unemployment so low, and firms desperate to find people, why aren’t you engaged in this? Why aren’t you critiquing your hiring managers for their performance. Eachow long they take to get back with feedback or useless feedback.
What does the hell does that mean? How useful is that in helping you, if you’re an HR, fill the job, help a third party recruiter help you fill the job, help you to critique better? And you annoy people, the job Hunter . . . and it’s not just the job hunter anymore. It’s the people that they know who they share their story to.
As it’s been said in advertising so often, if you want to offend someone, go ahead, but they’re going to tell a bunch more people and that’s going to have an impact. That’s not what you want to be doing. You want to be doing what Alexandra writes about.
