It’s Thanksgiving week as I’m recording this and I just thought I would share an idea with you that I think will be very helpful to over the course of the next few weeks. This is the time of year where, progressively, as we get closer to Christmas in the US ,it’s harder to do business, right? But it’s easier to do networking. It’s easier because people are more receptive to personal contact. They like talking to people that they haven’t spoken with all time, right. It’s friendly time. It’s family time.
Whether, again, I’m speaking US-centric, whether you’re Christian or Jewish, obviously with other faiths, there are other times of the year where this makes sense, but this is what came to mind now. And, that is, during this holiday time, it’s a time to reach out to other folks and especially ones you haven’t had contact with in a long time. Drop them a quick email and say, “hi! I was thinking about you. As we enter this time of year, just reaching out to you and say hi. Maybe we get together sometime in January.”
Share a little bit about yourself, what’s going on in your family, make it personal. Don’t try and push for a sale or a meeting. Just be the one who’s reaching out to connect. It goes a long way toward opening the door to conversation again.
You’re a job hunter? This is a golden way to start putting your network into action again come January. If you’re in business for yourself, you know, especially, for you smaller business owners, it is a great way to start, shall we say re-contacted old clients, people that you’ve been involved with in the past who have fallen through the cracks and open the door again one more time.
Again, no big push before Christmas unless they say, “hey, let’s get together before Christmas.” Obviously, do it. But, most of the time, you’ll be able to pick up the phone in early January. Set up a time to speak or meet with them. And it is a terrific approach for building the network.
