No B.S. Coaching Advice

Is The Problem Skill or Will? | No BS Management Advice

Identify what the problem is will go a long way toward solving it. By the way I briefly mentioned a third problem which is a personal problem . . . But those tend to be less common than these two.

I’m Jeff Altman, Not Big Game Hunter. I’m a career and leadership coach working with people to be more effective in their management and leadership, hiring, their job search, a couple of different areas.

Someone was talking with me about a problem they were having with an employee. The person had a great pedigree, terrific background, and something wasn’t clicking for them. And, to me, there are really three reasons. Number one is personal problem of some sort and they’re just trying to tough it out. Those don’t happen all that often. Sometimes, it’s a skill problem. Sometimes it’s a quote unquote, “will problem with a skill problem.”

You can always train someone;; you can push them; you can support them. You can do things to encourage them and help them with what’s getting in the way in terms of their knowledge.

With “a will problem,” that’s more difficult, because that’s the disengaged employee who doesn’t give a damn enough to do their best work.. . Yes, you can talk with them about the impact of their their behavior on the team. Yes, you can talk about how you need them to step up and perform as you expect them to. This may be a mishire on your part and there’s stuff to learn from this about what you chose to ignore that was there and visible, how you might have been able to dig this out deeper with better questions that could have flush this up.

You know, if you need some help, reach out to me. My website is you can visit the blog. I’ve got no Management advice information there that you can work with but what’s probably going to be more effective is if we do some coaching with one another on your hiring. You can schedule a discovery call with me or coaching session with me through a button on the homepage.

Have a great day and take care
