Legacy

Legacy | Career Angles

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

In the Hopi tradition, no decision is made until its effects on the next 7 generations have been considered. In this way, the Hopi people do their best to ensure that their children and grandchildren will inherit a more loving and sustainable planet. As leaders and followers we share an inheritance, which is to serve and inspire each other. In turn, we pass on this inheritance in the form of legacy. What is your legacy?

~Spirit@Work

Spirit@Work is an iPhone app that offers 77 words to inspire their leadership and living. Currently free, downloaded, and, when you do, open the app and then shape your phone. It will deliver a word of the day for you to focus on. My card today is, “Legacy.”

Although Spirit@Work cards are about the workplace, this is one card where I cannot ignore my personal legacy. After all, the cards serve me; I don’t serve them.

I live publicly, privately and in relationship to others.

My public face includes the 7000 YouTube videos I have on the JobSearchTV.com channel, the 2100+ episodes of No BS Job Search Advice Radio I have recorded over 10 years, and the many articles and interviews I’ve done. I give freely of my knowledge/

My private face involves my wife and son. We came together when I was 51, my wife was 41 and our son was one. We adopted him where he was living in Kazakhstan, traveling a few months after 9/11, a short time after the shoe bomber that caused us all to start removing our shoes at airports. As a family, we have had our challenges but created a safe place to be ourselves and love one another. He will be one of my legacies.

In my relationships with others, I believe I create safety and trust.

I say what I mean and mean what I say.

I am a “No BS” type of person who cares and supports others. I led men’s retreat’s nationally to support others live lives of mission and purpose, accountability, generosity and integrity. People still stop me, call me or message with thanks for my support.

I coach and mentor, often fulfilling a role a “good father” who listens and helps people sort things out.

Now, I am exploring a new place that I hope will be even more fulfilling — helping older people evolve into Elders in the workplace.

It feels rich.
