Lions, Gazelle, Hunting & You |

In this video, I use a story of lions hunting gazelle to make a point.

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m referred to as The Big Game Hunter for a couple of reasons. One, I hunted down leaders and staff for organizations for a long time. And the second reason I’m referred to that way is that I coach people to play the game bigger and better. Now, there’s a story I heard many years ago about how lions hunt gazelle, and I think is very poignant for most of us.

The way the story goes is when lions hunt, because there was no possibility that a lion can catch the gazelle because gazelles are just that much faster than lions are. But there’s a system that the lions have set up. I find absolutely amazing. The way this system works is old lions, those are the slowest of the pack, go to a place where they hide. The young lions kind of chase the gazelle in the direction of the old lions. Now, when you think about it, how does this work? Well, here’s how it goes.

What happens is the gazelle get up close to the old lions and just at the moment that they are so close, so so close, the old lions stand up and roar. This terrifies the gazelle, and they turn around and rush back into the teeth of the young lions who are able to kill them. The prey winds up feeding.

How does this relate to us? Well, first of all, if the gazelle has faced its fear and run toward the roar, it would have been able to run away because the old lions would never have been able to catch them. But because of fear, they turned around and run to their death.

Now, we know this is impossible for gazelle but, for us, as humans, there is a way that we can get support. And the support is with coaching. Because most of us, when we face our fear, the first thing we do is we run away and we become trapped into our own minds, and our own fears, and kind of wipe away any possibility of improvement. It’s unfortunate, but it’s true for most people.

That’s why coaching is so helpful. Coaching helps get you the support that you need to face the challenges of your life and a good coach, s/he’s not going to do the work for you. They’re going to support you with to with it in mindful and conscious ways.

So, I’m going to encourage you find a coach for yourself, find someone who can support you. Now, I happen to do coaching. I am obviously a coach. And I can work with you by Zoom or a whole host of different ways where I can support you with your work, with your effort to play life bigger.
