Congratulations! You’re now a manager. Woo Hoo! There is so much to learn in your new role. You probably don’t know a tenth of what you will need to know to be successful.
Interviewing people is one of those things people need to learn . . . FAST!
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a career and leadership coach, and I help people be effective professionally. That could be with a job search because I worked in executive search for many years, hiring more effectively (the other side of the work that I did), managing and leading and resolving workplace-related issues, while at the same time having the kind of career in life that you want.
I’m going to talk to those of you who are new managers. And I’m gonna probably do a series around this. But the thing I want to start by telling you is, when you become a manager, no one tells you everything that you need to know. And you probably haven’t observed everything that you need to know, in your observations of others. Just one day, you get the promotion. And thus, I want to give you some advice about a skill you need to cultivate right away. And that is the skill of learning how to interview.
Now, I would meet with HR as a first order of business to try and get some basics from them. And they are going to give you some pablum. But what you’ve done is give them the impression that they matter to you, which is a good thing politically. And then from there, start looking for resources about how to interview.
Now I’ve got a bunch of them on my website, TheBigGameHunter.us. And you can also go to places like LinkedIn Learning, where if you have a premium account, you have access to all the courses that they have there. You can get onto YouTube, you can talk to people.
And the basic advice I offer individuals when they hire is, number one, be clear about what you’re looking for, and how you’re going to evaluate for it. This also includes talking to the people who work for you who may be involved with the interview process, and be clear each time that they interview for you what you want them to evaluate for, and how.
So for example in technology, I’ll use something very simple, a Java developer job, that’s an enormous wealth of knowledge that someone needs to know to meet that. But what specifically about that? What specifically for a project manager? What do they need to know about project management? How would you recognize someone qualified, or unqualified, that relates to what you need them to do? These are all very simple things, but no one often talks about them.
And then from there, fit is always one of those quirky things, because, remember, they’re on good behavior on interviews. And so are you. How do you get them to lower their guard and open up? I’ll cover that in another video. But for today, I just want to remind you about the importance of how you interview as being a skill that you need to cultivate. You may make mistakes. But you’re going to start learning and become conscious just by doing these very few simple things.
