I speak about Buddhist teaching and how it applies to your career.
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, and welcome to No BS Coaching Advice. In this video, I begin a series that I’m going to be doing about career advice from the Buddha.
Now, most people don’t think of Buddhism in this regard, but there are wonderful teachings there that you can apply, even when you’re off the cushion. And, this particular teaching is designed to deal with that inflated self of our sense and of our own importance. I’m not going to go into a lot of depth about Buddhism in these. I just want to take a simple teaching and apply it to individuals and our circumstances.
Now, the advice Buddha gives is that we are relatively unimportant. That there is so many others in the world that our needs are dwarfed by the needs of the many and what’s important to us is very unimportant and that we should be more focused on service to others, then to our own importance, or false sense of importance. And that when we become fixated on ourselves, it becomes a source of suffering for us. So let’s apply that to your career.
Many of us, and include myself in there, often make the mistake of thinking we are far more important than we really are. You see, if you drop dead tomorrow, your firm would still go on. They would find someone to replace you and that individual would probably do a pretty good job. Maybe, there’ll be a learning curve for them, but they’ll replace you. The economy goes south. They decide one day your job isn’t as important as you think it is. You’re out the door, right?
Well, that’s the way it is in life. But, unfortunately, we tend to think of ourselves as being more important than we really are. Our self importance causes us discomfort and suffering. The result winds up being our unhappiness. This is a wonderful and simple teaching that reminds us of how unimportant we really are in the scheme of things and that we need to eliminate this sense of I– you know, “pay attention to me! I’m important! My needs are important.” Instead, focus on serving others.
