Pick up the pace

Pick Up The Pace | Career Angles

It’s sad for me to talk to so many people who are trapped in career lethargy having succumbed to their work environment. You don’t have to fall into line with mediocrity.

TRANSCRIPT

Come on, pick up the pace today. And I’m starting off in that sort of direct way of talking with you because I know so many of you wind up in situations where the systems that you work in, suck the life out of you. But I want you to live the life that you want to and have the career that you want, which involves a choice on your part about how you’re going to act.

Now, I think most of you can move faster in doing things than you think you can, and create your own exit velocity, velocity, your own trajectory moving forward in your career and in your life. And you’re sitting at a desk or you’re doing your job out in the world and you’ve kind of become more like a slug than someone who’s trying to drive and succeed.

Hey look, in the last couple of years, if there’s anything that we’ve we’ve picked up on, it’s that there are a lot of firms are moving at a faster, more agile pace. Hey, look, just the creation of this vaccine to deal with COVID-19 has been an incredible success. Why? Because the pace got picked up, operations got streamlined, people moved faster. And it appears as though they also move carefully.

But I’m going to say to you that most of the mistakes that you can make along the way, you can fix. They’re not going to be so critical and so damaging that the entire organization is going to blow up. So I just want to remind, you set a vision for yourself. What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to accomplish today? How can you stretch yourself just a little bit so you can be the person that you want to be because (pathetic voice) the more you sit at your desk, the more you sit there bored and disinterested, the more you bring that into your life as well.

It’s like a vampire. sucking the blood out of you. You don’t want that. And it’s a choice on your part. It’s a choice about what you accept at work, how you conduct yourself. And if they want the old version of you, the one who sits at the desk, doing the same repetitive thing over and over again, well, you can always go to someplace that wants this energy, but create the energy that you want. Create the situation that you want. Be the man or woman you want to be, and then go out into the world with that.
