Stay on Rabbit Hole Patrol! | Career Angles

Do you like going down rabbit holes professionally and personally?

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a coach who helps people in a variety of different ways. That could be with a job search, hiring more effectively,, managing and leading, executive coaching, career development. There’s a lot that I do to help people.

A person that I coach who is pulled in lots of different directions. And when he’s pulled in those lots of different directions, hee described it as going down a rabbit hole. Most of you will know that expression. It’s describes a situation where someone, the rabbit, is going into a hole, comes up on dead ends. There are lots of different paths that they can take. They run down each of those paths. They’re pulled every which way. They’re easily distractible and, thus, what he’s grown to realize that for him to be effective professionally and personally, is for him to be on rabbit hole patrol, as he calls it. Because if he takes his eye off the ball, he’s off and he never completes the first thing.

And for many of you, I know you need to be on rabbit hole patrol. And you can say, “well, it’s not quite that easy. I have to do multiple things.” And I know that’s true. But, however, if you do things one at a time, like you block out time on the calendar to do this thing during this period, and to go to the next thing or the next period, maybe you have to circle back to the first thing but plan it so you’re not constantly chasing your tail.

So understand by being on rabbit hole patrol, by keeping an eye out for the distractions that pull you every which way, you can be much more effective, get many more results, and move the needle forward in so much of your life.
