I don’t care if you are a first time manager or a grizzled old manager. This video is a reminder for you.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m back with more No BS Management Advice to help you as a manager be more effective in your role. Now, I don’t care if you’re a first time manager, or an experienced manager, if you have people around you for any length of time, you start to care about them. You start to like them, you start to really look out for them in an almost a maternalistic or paternalistic way.
You want them to do well and there is nothing wrong with this; it is a great quality to have, because you’re showing that you care employees want to know that their manager cares about them. And I want to remind you, they are not your friends. I’m going to repeat that one because it’s so important to remember this. They are not your friends, even though both of you, both sides of this are friendly.
Friendly is a great thing, but you have a responsibility, as well, that’s different than theirs. Often, employees abuse the relationship between themselves and their manager in order to get what they want. It’s normal for you as a manager (I’m going to differentiate manager and the leadership because managers are there in the trenches with people, and they’re more likely to succumb to this), your job is to get them to do stuff, and to do it bigger, better, faster, cheaper, more effectively, you know, faster, faster, accurately, more accurately. And that is what your role is.
And, yes, you can inspire them as a leader but I’m going to remind you, they’re not your friend. They are not your friend. Again, you may be friendly with them but, ultimately, your job is to get results or else you won’t be around to help them. Someone else will.
