What Are You Going to Do?

What Are You Going to Do? | Career Angles

For years, I wanted to write a book. One day, I sat down in my big comfy chair with a legal pad because that’s how I used to write in those days. I had a legal pads pen in my hand I really liked and started to write.

Four paragraphs later I stopped unhappy with what I did. I put it aside and said to myself, “I’ll come back to it tomorrow.” Surprisingly, I did but I didn’t do it for many more days. The pad set a coffee table for weeks before I eventually shifted to using it for scrap.

I did the same thing a few years later with my second cut at writing a book. I don’t remember how many times I came back to the pad but it wasn’t enough to actually write it. Again, after a week or so, the pad became lonely waiting for me to return to it.

A few years later, I decided to do it again. This time, I was armed with some additional information — the name of the coach and how to reach him. He responded to my email, we set up a time to speak and discussed how he would help me. Then the hammer dropped — it would cost $5000.

In retrospect, it is not a large price to pay but for me, at the time it felt that way. I remember walking into a group I would meet with regularly and started to talk about it.

We talked and talked and one of them asked, “What’s keeping you from doing it?” I realized it was the memory of my mother’s voice saying, “He’s going to cheat you,” that haunted me so many years later.

Yes, I hired him and James made a huge difference. He coached the book out of me during particularly difficult times. A few days before the first interview he was going to conduct of me, my mother died. When he called at the prearranged date and time I told him what happened. “Take two weeks off. I’ll call you two weeks from now at the same time.”

And right before that, my father died. When he made the phone call I told him, it is right there with me and listened and then said, “Take a month off. If you need more, let me know. I’m not going to let this fall apart on you.”

I have a lot of great ideas in the past and needed support from someone to pull them out of me. Ideas came easily to be. Execution was much more difficult.

I suspect the same may be true of you, too.

What are you going to do to change that?

Do you need a coach like I did (and like I now do)?

Do you need someone to support you with being accountable to yourself and your commitments to accomplish something important to you?

I don’t know what it is that you need, but you do.

Sitting on the fence not doing anything results in being stuck on those fence posts in painful places.

During those years where I didn’t write, little pieces of me died and I became numb to cope.

Your story may be different. Your story may be like mine.

The question always comes down to, “What are you going to do? How can you accomplish what you want to? Will you have the courage to ask for support?”
